To mark its seventy-fith anniversary, the Eastern New York Chapter of the American Guild of Organists sponsored an organ composition competition, to promote the creation of a work which would serve as a lasting commemoration of the occasion. Competitors were required to submit original works, written after September 14, 1995 (the actual chapter anniversary date). Forty-three entries were submitted by composers in the United States, Canada and Europe; these compositions make up the bulk of this collection. Entries were submitted in the form of manuscript scores, accompanied in three cases by cassette recordings demonstrating the pieces submitted.

The American Guild of Organists (A.G.O.) was founded by a group of English and American Church musicians. In 1896 the Guild was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, and was given the authority to grant titles of Associate and Fellow to those of its members who successfully pass the required examinations.
